Black History Month 2024

On Thursday, February 22nd, the Chef Council event, held in conjunction with a Farm to School culinary presentation, captivated a large audience at Martin Luther King High School. Chef Kim Minor of Marshall High School and her three talented students took center stage, showcasing the essence of Black History Month through a captivating culinary demonstration. The highlight of the event was a delectable Collard Greens and Chicken Sausage Gumbo, a recipe born from the collaborative efforts of Chef Kim Minor and her culinary students.

The live, in-class cooking demonstration was an immersive experience for approximately 45 MLK students, who actively participated under the guidance of the Marshall High School students and Chef Kim Minor. The event's reach extended beyond the classroom, with other Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors and their students joining remotely via Google Meets.

The high attendance and enthusiasm surrounding the event were palpable, as students relished the opportunity to savor their finished Gumbo and share their culinary creations with MLK staff. The compelling demonstration, led by three high school students from another institution, was particularly inspiring, highlighting the collaborative spirit that permeated the occasion. This event served as a testament to the power of culinary arts in bringing communities together and celebrating cultural heritage.
