MLK High's Flavorful Lesson: Salsa Roja and Verde

On Thursday, September 21st, Chicago Public School students from Martin Luther King High School participated in a Farm to School event designed to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. This unique learning opportunity combined history, culture, and culinary expertise. Prior to this event, students studied the various vegetables and ingredients that are included in preparing "Salsa." In addition, they learned about the current development process and production. During this event, students encountered a lively decorated classroom with traditional Mexican decorations and posters notifying them about the September 27th serve that included "Salsa."

They discovered the fascinating history behind the molcajete, a traditional Mexican mortar and pestle, gaining insights into its role in Hispanic culinary traditions while having a hands-on experience with the device and making “Salsa Roja and Verde.” They also explored modern culinary techniques by using blenders and food processors. Students sampled the delicious salsa they created during the class, making this educational experience both flavorful and culturally enriching. This initiative not only educated students about local foods but also fostered an appreciation for diverse cultures and culinary skills.
