Plastic Free Day
Waves of Change: Students Combat Plastic Pollution at Oakwood Beach
On Wednesday, May 22nd, students from Martin Luther King High School took part in an inspiring Farm to School activity centered around the theme of living plastic-free. The event aimed to educate students on the importance of reducing plastic use while giving back to the community through environmental stewardship.
The day began with a one mile walk from their school to Oakwood Beach. Once there, they rolled up their sleeves and set to work, cleaning the beach area and learning about the significant impact plastic pollution has on our environment. The hands-on experience not only highlighted the importance of maintaining a plastic-free environment but also fostered a sense of responsibility and community among the students.
To complement the plastic-free theme, the students enjoyed a thoughtfully prepared lunch featuring sun butter and jelly sandwiches, fresh vegetables, fruit, and apple juice. The meal also included a choice of chocolate, 2%, or strawberry milk, with all items wrapped in paper and bagged in environmentally friendly paper bags. This eco-conscious approach to lunch packaging underscored the day's lesson on reducing plastic use.
After the beach clean-up, the students were rewarded with a well-deserved break, enjoying a variety of beach games. The combination of environmental action and fun activities made the day both educational and enjoyable.
