Mitchell Students' Vibrant Day at Big Delicious Planet

On June 1, 2023, CPS Mitchell School students enjoyed an educational and flavorful day at Big Delicious Planet (BDP), America's certified Greenest Caterer. This hands-on experience highlighted the fun and importance of sustainable, urban farming for our students, transforming a day out into a delightful learning adventure.

At BDP's lush urban farm, our students enthusiastically explored the rows of 72 raised garden beds, brimming with an array of seasonal crops. The tour sparked curiosity and many eager questions about the fruits and vegetables grown right in the heart of the city.

A highlight of the visit was the observation of BDP's three active beehives. This provided an opportunity for our students to gain insights into the critical role that bees play in our food system.

As part of their immersive farm experience, students were treated to refreshing mint lemonade and fresh garden veggie tastings. These flavorsome samplings, derived straight from BDP's own crops, were met with wide eyes and delighted smiles. In addition, students enjoyed their usual CPS lunch during the outing.

This enriching field trip to Big Delicious Planet truly brought our Farm-to-School initiative to life.
